This Surname Index is a listing of all the burial records for both Old and New St George's Churches from 1777 to November 2022, which exceed 8000 in total. It is intended to help locate records quickly in the source documents that are available on the 'Burials, Inscriptions and Transcripts' page.
Currently the index is for the burial registers only. We will incorporate the data from memorials as soon as possible, which will add further information and greatly assist searching for family members. You will need to know the surname of the person. The index will list all the people in the records with that surname. If a grave location is provided for a person you are interested in, you could also search for all burials at that grave, which would extend your search.
The following information is in the search index where recorded in the registers:
- the source document reference and the record number, e.g. 'N1-0123' would mean New St George, register no.1, record 123. You would then find document N1 on the Burials, Inscriptions and Transcripts page and know that record 123 is what you are interested in.
- the full name of the deceased. If the forename is unknown or not applicable (e.g. a stillbirth), "--" is shown in its place. There are also a few records listed on a separate page where the deceased was unidentified, i.e. their surname is unknown.
- dates of passing and of burial
- if the burial was of ashes, this is indicated.
- the grave number (for OSG it is a number, for NSG it is a row and grave reference). A grave number in brackets is still valid but it was not recorded in the burial register.
- the age of the deceased. By default this is expressed in years. Alternatively one or more of the indicators y, m, w, d, h and/or min may be shown representing years, months, weeks, days, hours and/or minutes.
- names of known relatives. Their surname is not shown if it is the same as the deceased. To find out the actual relationship, you'll need to look up the record in the source document.
- there may be a note shown for some records.
Other information that might be shown in the source documents:
- the persons 'abode', i.e. address or part of it
- there may be additional notes
- grave inscriptions and other family members not yet in the index
How to search by surname:
Click on the first letter of the person's surname, then click on the required surname. You might need to advance to additional pages by clicking 'next page>>'. Glance down the list of people with that surname, which is in alphabetical order of forename. You can make a note of any details you are interested in. A grave number can be used to 'Search by grave'. The 'source' and grave number can be used to look up further information on the 'Burials and Transcripts' page.
How to search by grave:
With a grave location in mind, select the appropriate grouping for the location, then click on the required grave reference. You might need to advance to additional pages by clicking 'next page>>'. One or more people will be listed as buried at that grave. In these listings, an item of data called "reg" indicates whether the grave location was actually recorded in the burial register, which is more definitive than a memorial.
